Love Hate Song

It’s Valentine’s Day today and to celebrate all you lovers (and haters!) out there we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite fucked-up love songs alongside some truly vicious anthems of hatred. This morning is all the gooey stuff, in the afternoon it's gonna get ugly! Muse ‘Unintended’ Back in 99 there was this band called Muse who played weird indie-rock music and were bloody massive in France… and then this song happened, giving them their first top 20 hit. Not only is ‘Unintended’ one of Muse’s best slow tunes, it’s also probably their most sentimental to date and a genuine love song. It may seem a bit gloomy but the lyrics tell the story of a person leaving their depression behind after finding happiness through love (bless). We can’t help but shed a tear when we hear Matt Bellamy sing that we could be the one he’ll always love. The feeling’s mutual, sugar lips. Dashboard Confessional ‘Screaming Infidelities’ The emo godhead’s most perfectly-pitched moment, an ode to being completely and utterly in love and more than a little bit hopeless at the same time. Endearingly shameless in its vulnerability. Green Day ‘2000 Light Years Away’ Much as it may surprise Green Day’s 21st Century audience, there was a time when a young Billie-Joe Armstrong was penning many an innocent love song of one description or another. Still making an appearance in their live shows to this day, ‘2000 Light Years Away’ is a pretty straightforward affair, expressing the frontman’s heartache at being separated from the love of his life, and future wife, Adrienne Nesser. Capturing the hearts of a legion of love-struck teenagers, this fizzy, propulsive and instantly addictive tune also left us wondering exactly what a bloody ‘malachite’ was anyway… Stone Sour ‘Say You’ll Haunt Me’ Who’d have thought Corey Taylor would have this relatively tender ballad up his boiler suit sleeve? Whoever he’s yelling at we’ll bet they feel very lucky indeed. Either that, or somewhat terrified. The King Blues 'Underneath This Lamppost Light' Love isn’t all flowers, chocolates and clichés, as only Itch could demonstrate by professing his love via the usually unromantic post-bender walk home – “I know it smells of piss, but you look beautiful tonight.” Aww. The Gaslight Anthem ‘Here’s Looking At You, Kid’ A standout track from 08’s breakthrough album ‘The ’59 Sound’, Brian Fallon employs his trademark blend of nostalgia, charm and wry wit to draw a line under the memory of the ones who got away. Descendents ‘I’m The One’ Boy meets girl, girl loves someone else, boy writes awesome punk song; the setup always remains the same, but the Descendents did it first, inspiring decade after decade of lovesick pop punk and emo brilliance. Metallica ‘Nothing Else Matters’ It may have been culled from their none-more-commercial Black Album, but even so it was quite a shock to hear James Hetfield getting all mushy over a broad, proclaiming distance to be no barrier to true love. Softie. Tool ‘Parabol / Parabola’ Far be it us to put words in the mouth of Maynard James Keenan, but while as ambiguous as ever this at least suggests a heartfelt feeling of love for something, okay? The Ataris 'San Dimas High School Football Rules' When a song mentions dating at Disneyland, it’s easy to feel weird. But get over that and you’ll be rewarded by a song that perfectly captures what it is to be young and in love. Paramore ‘The Only Exception’ Showing that there was more to the Tennesse rockers than upbeat pop-punk, this acoustic-led, beautifully wrought emotional rollercoaster finds Hayley Williams in stunning voice as she details her loss of faith in everlasting love. Following the failure of her parents’ marriage, she retreats into the self-defensive shell of a singleton, only to have her beliefs challenged when she finally meets ‘the one’ (New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert). Nevertheless, her insecurities remain, and what we’re left with is a starkly honest picture of a girl struggling to reconcile the warning bells in her head with the inescapable feeling in her heart. Converge 'Heaven In Her Arms' You could stick a pin in a list of Converge songs for either side of the love / hate divide, but this coruscating ode to doomed love takes the prize: savage, bruised and bloody, but not quite beaten yet. My Chemical Romance ‘Early Sunsets Over Monroeville’ It’s songs like this that show how early the New Jersey emo godfathers mastered their craft – taking the star-crossed lovers format and giving it the MCR treatment, this chronicles the demise of a doomed relationship set within the Dawn Of The Dead movie plot (you should recognise references to Monroeville Mall, the setting of its infamous zombie chase scene). And while it does without their signature shredding guitars and super-sized choruses, the song’s pared-down, Husker Dü-style delivery makes Gerard Way’s raw emotion it all the more real. The zombie apocalypse aspect makes it a little less real, though. Jimmy Eat World ‘For Me This Is Heaven’ If you want a weepy that won’t actually make you sick, crack out the Kleenex and slap on this poignant little number: a classy, sensitive soundtrack to the demise of a relationship that just wasn’t meant to be. Jawbreaker ‘Shirt’ Blake Schwarzenbach’s lyrics consistently and cleverly mix metaphor and reality, even though they get a little creepy: “I wanna be your shirt / So I can hug you while you work / I wanna be your wife / So you can beat me every night.” Yikes! HIM ‘Razorblade Kiss’ Anyone who says ‘You’re just a kid’ for believing pain is part of romance can shut up. Ville Valo was in his 20s when he wrote this and the prince of darkness knows taking the rough with the smooth makes love sexy. Weezer ‘Across The Sea’ Having received a personal letter from a young Japanese fan, Rivers Cuomo develops a morally dubious but still cute fascination with the girl, yet remains tormented by the insurmountable – yet perhaps advisable – distance between them. Pure obsession. Alkaline Trio ‘This Could Be Love’ Splitting the demise of an unlucky-in-love guy into four easy steps, Alkaline Trio’s dark imagery seemed dramatic to some. But set to their classic pop-punk song writing? A morbid, bloody romance never sounded so delightful. Rise Against ‘Swing Life Away’ Proof that an understatement can be just as powerful as a grandiose display of affection; stripped down to an acoustic guitar, cello, and the softer side of Tim McIlrath’s voice, this is a blue-collar masterpiece of devotion. Frank Turner ‘To Take You Home’ Whether he’s singing about music, life or politics, there’s nothing Frank Turner can’t turn into something beautiful. And while this might gain you tons of fans and acclaim, it doesn’t necessarily get you girls. As his song explains, meeting a seemingly uninterested French girl at a death metal gig results in him having to work for his keep, just like the rest of us – but, set to an acoustic full band arrangement, no one could demonstrate the euphoric payoff better. When a song is this lovely it prompts one question; how could the girl in question not like his songs? Biffy Clyro ‘Many Of Horror’ ‘Many Of Horror’ is like someone took everything bad about relationships and drenches them with a sense of hope. Simon Neil suffers the bruises of love and still has faith. Nine Inch Nails ‘Closer’ There’s obviously nothing more romantic than playing this tune to your other half and joining in with the chorus: “I want to fuck you like an animal, I want to feel you from the inside”. Beautiful. Trivium ‘This World Can’t Tear Us Apart’ The chorus drips with a romantic chord progression and the lyrics confirm nothing in this hateful world will tear Matt Heafy from his betrothed once they’re safe in their love bunker, full of energy drinks and metalcore albums. Bless. Blink-182 ‘I Miss You’ The catchy, upbeat, fart-joke-making pop-punksters transform into sad, ex lamenting puppy dogs with ‘I Miss You.’ And as they spill their feelings with so much sincerity, you can’t help go ‘Aww… they’re all grown up!’ Andrew W.K. ‘Let’s Go On A Date’ You know those teen films where the geek can’t get the girl and ends up humiliating himself? If only someone had told him to play this loudly in the college car park. Andrew never fails.
